We did not doubt the result from the first match, as Olympiakos looked like a better team on the paper but after 90 minutes at the Karaiskaki stadium, it is sure that Greek champions are far above Slovan. The team from Bratislava has little chance to progress to the group stage of the UEL after a bad 3-0 defeat, with some reasons to question their management qualities. Slovan practically pushed a few of their best players out of the door this summer and on the other hand, failed to get anybody decent in over the last month, so the final result was so inevitable.
Slovan didn’t have or even never deserved to have luck with the referee decision as the second Olympiakos goal looks like a clear offside situation, completely ignored by the linesman. It was Guinea player Aguibou Camara who put the Greek team ahead in the 37th minute before Senegal’s Pape Cisse added the second in the 52nd for a 2-0 goal lead at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Lack of defenders on the left-back was crucial in the first game, as Bozhikov had to be moved from the central defensive role closer to that side, and he scored an own goal in the 68th minute. Olympiakos were 3-0 up after the Bulgarian international turned the ball into his net after a sweeping cross from Cisse. Their usual left-back Lucas Lovat and attacking midfielder David Holman are still both injured.

Olympiakos walked away with a comfortable victory and they are looking forward to jumping in a draw for the group stages of the UEL. Their target for the season was to play as many games in Europe, and after they failed to pass Ludogoretz in the qualifiers for the UCL they will be satisfied with this easy progress against Slovakian champions. After that, they could turn their attention to the Greek Superleague and game against Lamia on August 27. Of course, Slovan will try to cause an upset, but Olympiakos will be even stronger in this match as Nigerian winger Onyekuru, on loan from Monaco, will be able to play even more minutes in the rematch. For 15 minutes in the first match, Onyekuru created two chances which were not converted by Cisse, and also had a powerful shot from outside the box after he replaces experienced Valbuena.
Olympiakos handled better their injury crisis because of a far bigger and better roster, but Tiqinho, Kostas Fortounis, and Cisse are all ruled out with injuries. Central defender Ousseynou Ba is back after serving a one-match suspension. Olympiakos look like a team that is far more experienced to play in these kinds of matches. Greek champions are more comfortable with the ball at their feet, not prone to make many errors as Slovan did in Pireus. Just one goal in the rematch will ease the pressure from the Slovan fans that could make a good atmosphere in their new super-modern stadium.
