A place in the knockout stages is on the line when Ajax entertain Atalanta this week.
The Dutch giants trail La Dea by one point ahead of the teams’ pivotal clash at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, and only a victory for Ajax will see them into the last 16 alongside group winners Liverpool. Six of the seven points that Ajax has in this group came from wins against the Danish side. The other was earned in Italy, they led 2-0 in Atalanta but came home with a 2-2 draw. Ajax had looked on course for three points in Bergamo on Matchday 2 thanks to first-half goals from Dušan Tadić, a penalty, and Lacina Traoré, but the home side hit back after the interval, two Duván Zapata strikes earning a draw. But for that, they’d just need to avoid defeat in this game to qualify. Home form in the Champions League has seen Ajax struggling with three straight defeats before beating Midtjylland. The weekend saw them lose their 100% home league record, losing 2-1 at home to Twente, though they still lead the table by two points. Not the best of starts to an important week.
Ajax has a few injury concerns to account for and will have to do without David Neres and Noussair Mazraoui in this game. Mohammed Kudus is also recuperating from a long-term injury and is unavailable for this game.

Atalanta was making good progress in this group with a 4-0 win at Midtjylland, followed by rescuing that home point against Ajax. Then, they showed how inconsistent they can be with a 5-0 home loss to Liverpool and then beating them 2-0 away. They had a home game against Midtjylland and they again had to come from behind to get a 1-1 final result. Now they need to avoid defeat in the Netherlands to again reach the knock-out stages of this competition. Four of their last five away games in this group have been won (the other a quarter-final loss last season to PSG). They had a free weekend with their Serie A game postponed due to a waterlogged pitch in Udine.
Atalanta had their ups and downs in this season, they started brightly, scoring goals for fun but after few games, they lost their mojo, started to miss chances, and at the end even didn't found proper ways to create anything in the final third. They looked like a tired team lately and that is close to reality after many matches in the last season and tough international games for most of their players who had big roles in their national teams.
Robin Gosens and Aleksey Miranchuk have tested positive for the coronavirus and are ruled out of this fixture. Mattia Caldara, Pierluigi Gollini, and Sam Lammers are injured and will not feature against Ajax.
