Former Gunners boss Unai Emery returns to Emirates Stadium with a battle-hardened outfit packed full of experienced performers well equipped to cope with the pressure of a narrow 2-1 advantage. Villarreal dropped just two points during the group stage and have now won seven straight matches in the knockout rounds and the Yellow Submarine look on a mission to continue Spain’s great record in this competition. The only occasion that they were beaten after winning the first leg was against Liverpool in the semi-finals of this competition in the 2015-16 season. Villarreal’s form in European competition has been excellent over the past couple of seasons, as they are unbeaten in 13 games.
On the other hand, it would be dangerous for Villarreal to try and sit on their narrow lead, as a 1-0 defeat would see them crash out via the away goals rule. Emery may target an early strike in London to address that situation and has the attacking firepower to hurt the Gunners in Gerard Moreno and Paco Alcacer. Villarreal are unbeaten in 13 games in European competition (W12, D1), winning each of their last nine, and have enough experience to see this tie through.
