Jonas Hofmann remains a doubt for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s trip to Augsburg on Friday when Reece Oxford is pushing for a start against his former club. Read our reasons for Augsburg vs M'gladbach prediction and betting tips.
Ex-West Ham player Reece Oxford made the first seven of his 43 Bundesliga appearances as a Foals player in 2017/18, including four alongside Hofmann, and will be desperate to feature against his old side, but the English defender has been a victim of Heiko Herrlich’s return to a back four, with Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Felix Uduokhai the two first-choice center-backs. The change in tactic appears to have worked with a draw against Bayer Leverkusen and win over Mainz. It almost produced a point again last week until Hertha Berlin’s late winner from the penalty spot.
Laszlo Benes, who is himself on loan from Gladbach until the end of the season, had given Augsburg the lead in the capital. Benes has registered one goal and five assists in 40 Bundesliga appearances for parent club Gladbach. With no new fresh injury concerns, Herrlich is set to stick with the team that has started the last two matches, including yet more former Foals in Tobias Strobl and Augsburg’s five-goal joint leading scorer Hahn. The one-time Germany international contributed 30 goals in 90 competitive games for the Foals.

Hofmann missed last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at home to Leverkusen with a problem in the same thigh that saw him sidelined for two months at the end of 2020. Coach Marco Rose explained they didn’t want to take a risk with their top provider (nine assists, plus five goals) but are hopeful the Germany international will be fit this coming weekend. Gladbach could certainly do with him as they look to end a three-match losing run in the league – their longest under Rose – and snap a six-game winless streak going back to their 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 18. The Foals have suffered as many league defeats after 24 games as they did across the entire previous campaign (nine).
However, they are boosted by the return of captain Lars Stindl after he served a suspension last time out. Gladbach's top scorer Stindl has had a direct hand in more goals against Augsburg than any other Bundesliga club he’s faced (eight goals and seven assists in 16 games). FIFA 2014 World Cup winner Christoph Kramer is also a potential alternative in midfield if he overcomes an ankle issue in time.
