Blackburn got back to winning ways in the capital on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Millwall at The Den. The Rovers picked up their first win in seven Championship outings (D1, L6), but after starting this season in blistering form, scoring goals and looking like early contenders for promotion, that momentum have petered out and Rovers now find themselves in mid-table limbo (15th) once again. As for Swansea, two consecutive 2-1 wins at Stoke and against Middlesbrough at the weekend handed the Swans six points, and, as a result, moved them to within a point of second-placed Watford with two games in hand.
Rovers’ season unraveled in their seven-game winless run, but their togetherness and belief didn’t. Tony Mowbray has continued to stress as much in a period that saw Rovers collect just one point from a possible 21 and in doing so saw any prospective play-off hopes end. However, the question mark wasn’t whether Rovers could produce such a performance as the one which saw them earn the first win since January, it is why we haven’t seen it more regularly.
Possession has been the backbone on which Rovers’ season has been built, but it was a defensive resilience at Millwall that paved the way for victory. And by the end, that allowed their quality in the final third to shine through. The win halted the slump and put smiles back on faces - things not to be sniffed at heading into an Ewood triple header, and fixtures against three promotion candidates before the international break.
On the other hand, the manner of Swansea’s two consecutive victories left a sharp reminder that football has more twists and turns than a game of snakes and ladders. Steve Cooper bristled at suggestions Swansea had fortune on their side in their controversial victory over Boro and said it was the right decision to award his side a penalty in the final seconds as Andre Ayew stepped up to score a 97th minute winner - a few days earlier, Swansea were awarded a similarly controversial penalty to snatch all three points against Stoke.
Ayew had the Swans ahead going into stoppage time, only for Sam Morsy's deflected effort to look like salvaging a point for Boro. But, as against Stoke in midweek, Ayew converted from the spot at the death to take his tally for the season to 13 as Swansea moved into third. It seems it is persistence, even when the team is as poor as it was again on Saturday, that seems to be the winning formula for the Swans.

Blackburn meet Swansea unbeaten previously in seven home games versus the Swans (W4 D3) in all competitions. However, Swansea are looking to record a league double over Blackburn for the first time in their English league history after they celebrated a 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in Wales in October.
Rovers have still lost three more matches than they’ve won and there was a big sense of relief surrounding the weekend result.
