After suffering just one defeat in his first 13 league games in charge of Cardiff, McCarthy has seen his side lose games back to back with the latest humbling 5-0 defeat coming against Sheffield Wed. With his side sitting eighth in the table, eight points behind sixth-placed Reading, McCarthy shifted his attention to the upcoming league game against Blackburn proclaiming it a must win for the Bluebirds. As for their opponents, with one win in 14 games (D4, L9), it's a huge relief that Blackburn accumulated so many points earlier on in the campaign otherwise they would be relegated by now. They have dropped to 17th place and nothing will stop Tony Mowbray from getting the sack if they don’t turn the corner.
The result against the Owls was a disappointing one for Cardiff after such a positive start to McCarthy’s managerial reign but he is hoping to see his men improve and put in a better effort in their next fixtures with eight games left to play. However, the lack of goals is a concern for his Cardiff side and it also suggests other teams had now worked out how to nullify their threats. The hugely disappointing result on Easter Monday is the culmination of a series of six games now, where, the South Wales derby aside, the Bluebirds have struggled to make their mark at the top end of the pitch.
In Cardiff's last half a dozen fixtures, they have scored only two goals. The Bluebirds' unapologetically direct approach has lacked that accuracy and clinical edge which is so desperately needed to carry it out effectively, resulting in clear-cut chances being so few and far between in recent games. And McCarthy suggested that he may have to go back to the drawing board because his team, who were once knocking down all that was put in front of them, are now running into brick walls.
Meanwhile, with one win in fourteen and a squad visually dejected, how have Blackburn managed to find themselves in this predicament? Passive, subdued and inspiring, Rovers may have enjoyed plenty of the ball on Monday but lacked substance to invent. That's just a microcosm of what has unfolded at the club. It's not the first time this side have looked worryingly pedestrian - you only have to glance at Friday's defeat to basement side Wycombe - and, as much as it pains to mention, it certainly won't be the last.
And at a time when supporters could potentially be back in time for the new campaign, Rovers run the bizarre risk of failing to entice their own supporters back to Ewood at a time when every football fan yearns their return to a football stadium. A season of seeming prosperity has unravelled into a bleak canvas of inferiority. If the Rovers hierarchy are to discuss which direction the club is heading, their investigation should take them far deeper than just the managerial situation.
