Freiburg will need to find a way to stop promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.
Freiburg is without a win in nine league outings since that Matchday 1 triumph. It’s their longest drought in six years. They have been slipping towards the danger zone and find themselves just a point above promoted Bielefeld, having not won since the opening weekend against the top flight’s other returnees, VfB Stuttgart. Christian Streich’s side has a run of three straight defeats with back-to-back draws against Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, having reverted to a 3-4-3 formation.
Vincenzo Grifo converted from the spot in the 2-2 draw with Gladbach and is expected to continue alongside summer signing Ermedin Demirovic in attack after he impressed Streich on his first two starts for the club over the last couple of matchdays. It means all-time top scorer Nils Petersen likely has to settle for a place on the bench again, although he does hold the Bundesliga record for goals by a substitute. Japanese international Doan is the only Bielefeld player to have multiple goals and assists this season (two each). He got one of both in last week’s 2-1 win over Mainz.
