Granada host Man United at the Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium (Granada) in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Thursday, April 8. Read our reasons for Granada vs Man United prediction and betting tips.
It is difficult to imagine Man Utd losing this tie. The Red Devils have only lost one of their previous 23 EPL matches. Still, with five draws coming in their last nine league games, it is evident that Solskjaer’s men have struggled to kill off games of late. That said, Man Utd crushed Real Sociedad 4-0 in the Round of 32, before overcoming Milan in the previous round. Meanwhile, Granada has been very unpredictable this season, with La Liga record of W10, D6, L12 mirroring the team’s inconsistency. Granada's debut season in European competition has brought them all the way to the quarter-finals, where they face 2016/17 winners Man United. Granada have enjoyed a remarkable run in their first European campaign. Having started out in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round, the Spanish club were runners-up to PSV Eindhoven in Group E before ousting Napoli in the round of 32 and Molde in the round of 16 with identical results, winning 2-0 at home before losing 2-1 away.
They were only promoted to La Liga two years ago and then qualified for the Europa League by finishing seventh and Diego Martinez’s men have made the most of the opportunity. Two wins in ten league matches prior to the international break mean their hopes of a top-seven finish this season are fading and their record against the top teams does not bode well for their chances against United. They will need to make the most of home advantage in the first leg but that will play into the United’s hands.
Meanwhile, Man United competed in the Champions League during the autumn, where the defeats in their final two Group H fixtures left them in third place on nine points behind Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig. They have subsequently come through two Europa League ties, eliminating Spanish side Real Sociedad with ease, before edging past Milan in the round of 16. Moreover, United have lost just one of their last 12 away fixtures in the competition (W7, D4) and have scored at least once in all of their Europa League knockout phase encounters outside England.
Against Milan in the previous round, once again their away form did not let them down as Paul Pogba returned from injury with a bang to fire the Red Devils to a 1-0 victory. However, the hectic schedule looked to have taken its toll on Solskjaer’s side during their defeat at Leicester in the FA Cup and there is a sense that the international break came at a good time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men. United’s defense should be able to keep Granada’s aging attack quiet and a similar performance to their first leg against Sociedad must be the aim here.
