Bundesliga 2 club Holstein Kiel is next on the menu for DFB Cup holders Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Kiel were German champions in 1911/12, but have never played in the Bundesliga or faced the Bayern pros in any competition. The aspiring Bundesliga club also boasts the meanest defense in Bundesliga 2 with 14 conceded. Kiel's top-tier credentials could scarcely be put to a sterner test. Ole Werner's side is second in the current Bundesliga 2 standings, only a point behind leaders Hamburg after 15 rounds of fixtures. They went into 2021 unbeaten in eight matches, but have failed to win in two after defeating Osnabrück and Saturday's 1-1 draw with northern rivals, St. Pauli.
A 7-1 drubbing of Fifth Division representatives Rielasingen got them this far in Germany's domestic cup, with former Bundesliga forwards Fin Bartels and Fabian Reese among the goals. It's midfielder Alexander Mühling who's their top scorer so far this term, though, with six strikes in 16 outings. Kiel has reached the quarter-finals twice - in 1943 and then 2012.

Lewandowski scored for the eighth time in his last five appearances in the Bundesliga Matchday 15 opener to take his season tally to 23 goals in 20 appearances. Although Bayern was beaten 3-2 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, they remain top of the Bundesliga and on course to emulate their 2019/20 treble win. The DFB Cup was the second part of that sensational trilogy, with Lewandowski scoring twice in a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the final. Douglas Costa and Alphonso Davies will likely make way, while Serge Gnabry is set for a return after a bruised shin.
Holders Bayern has reached at least the semi-finals in their last 11 seasons in a row. They haven't been eliminated by lower-league opposition since 2003/04 when then Bundesliga 2 outfit Alemannia Aachen shaded their quarter-final tie 2-1. Lewandowski and Thomas Müller are the competition's highest scorers among still active players, with 39 and 32 goals respectively. Müller, Manuel Neuer, and David Alaba are bidding to win the DFB Cup for a record-equalling seventh time. Bastian Schweinsteiger currently holds the outright record.
