Koln must beat a relegated Schalke to have a realistic chance of staying in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Read our Koln vs Schalke prediction and betting tips.
Koln head into the final weekend in 17th place, a point behind relegation play-off incumbents Werder Bremen and two adrift of 15th-in-the-table Arminia Bielefeld. Given their inferior goal difference on Werder, the Billy Goats must take maximum points and hope the two teams directly above them don't avoid being relegated automatically. The play-offs could offer an alternative route out of their predicament, but only if Bielefeld beat VfB Stuttgart and Bremen fail to win at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Any other combination of results - barring a draw coupled with a Bremen defeat by nine goals - will see incoming head coach Steffen Baumgart pick up the reins in Bundesliga 2 next season. Interim boss Friedhelm Funkel has overseen two wins and a draw across his last four matches to give the Cathedral City club a fighting chance but will be without suspended duo Ismail Jakobs and Ellyes Skhiri on Matchday 34. Captain Jonas Hector has trained, though, and should start.

Schalke's fate was confirmed with defeat to Bielefeld on Matchday 30. Had the Royal Blues shown as much fight across the campaign as they have in recent matches, the outcome may have been different. A 4-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt followed spirited defeats to Hoffenheim and Hertha Berlin. It marked only their third win of the campaign but ensures they won't tie the ignominious Bundesliga record for the fewest victories in a single season. Matthew Hoppe scored one and made another against Frankfurt to end a run of 13 Bundesliga matches without a goal.
The American entered the fray as a second-half substitute on the penultimate weekend but has to be considered an option for the starting line-up, especially with Huntelaar nursing a calf problem. Academy player Blendi Idrizi and emerging talent Florian Flick were also on target last time out and should continue in the side. The likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Bastian Oczipka, Benjamin Stambouli, and Goncalo Paciencia could feature for the last time ahead of a mass summer exodus.
