After the promotion to the Premier League, Leeds received a bye for the first round of the Carabao Cup and entered the second stage. They will take on Hull under the lights of Elland Road on Wednesday, September 16 and the match will kick off at 7.45pm (UK). The winner here will visit London in the third round to play either West Ham United or Charlton Athletic.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds side is looking to establish themselves back in the Premier League, after a 16-year absence from English football's top flight. Leeds finished their campaign ten points above the second-placed West Brom, after finishing the season on a high note. They won 12 of their last 14 games, and were brilliant throughout the whole season.
At the weekend, Leeds were impressive in their Premier League debut against Liverpool, even though they lost (4-3). They came back from behind three times and showed impressive resilience. The seven weeks since Hull City dropped out from the Championship has helped forget the gloom but it remains hard to be positive with the expectations for the new season around Grant McCann’s team. There haven't been enough changes to lift the fears that the hangover will be carried into League One. When you win only one game and six points in total from the final twenty games it's hard to shake of the negativity.
Their campaign started already when they recorded their first competitive loss in 2020/2021 season on September 8 in the EFL Trophy against Leicester City U21. On the brighter side, the addition of Lewie Coyle, Richie Smallwood and Greg Docherty look like a clever buys which will address the inadequacies in the side.
