On Friday at Parc Olympique Lyon will start the new Ligue 1 campaign with a match against Dijon after they postponed their last week match due to the UEFA Champions League Final Eight tournament.
Rudi Garcia’s men were the major surprise of the Champions League after knocking out football giants Juventus and Manchester City. They also had a big performance and great chances against later winners Bayern but were severely punished on the other side for the final 3-0 loss. Although they showed the most reliable football last season in the restart period where they also lost French Cup final with PSG only on penalties they will not play in the next season in the European cups after finishing at seventh place in the last season of Ligue 1.
Last league season in France finished in mid-March due to coronavirus pandemic. That means they can focus only on domestic competitions this time and they will have all the time to prepare for each Ligue 1 game. After sacking Brasilian rookie coach Sylvinho they had to adapt to a very different and more conservative style that is favorable by experienced Rudi Garcia. Their form was better as time pasted and Champions League matches gave them confidence that they are very close to PSG and better than any other French team so they will have great ambitions in Ligue 1.
Lyon didn't play the game in the previous weekend because of their UCL obligations in Portugal and maybe they are a little bit tired but Garcia has a big roster to choose from and that should not be an issue. Lyon’s team should be very similar to the one seen in the UCL games, Memphis Depay despite still unfit for 90 minutes will probably put captain armband but he can also be disturbed by media reports that Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman will try to bring him as a first major signing.
Transfer window is probably most dangerous for team atmosphere and a focus because numerous Lyon players are very interesting for major clubs, so Aouar is Arsenal target, Dembele could be heading to Premier League and there are reports that Lyon is willing to sell someone just to fill the budget after they lost the chance to play in Europe in this season.
Dijon didn't have a great start of the campaign as they lost at home 1-0 vs Angers. That was a good sign that Dijon manager Stephane Jobard must find something extra to turn around their performances and results. As a reminder, they ended the 2019/2020 season in 16th place and finished just three points above what would have been the relegation playoff place.
Dijon started well but had a goal disallowed in the early stages because striker Aurélien Scheidler was in an offside when he scored past Bernardoni. Ismael Traore was the match-winner for Angers in the 22nd minute, he was in the right place at the right time to get to the rebound after the ball hit the post of the Alfred Gomis goal. The biggest chance for Dijon came a little bit later when Jordan Marie latched on the good pass inside the box and his effort deflected off the left post. In the second half, Scheidler again was on target but as similar in the first half he sealed his shot past Bernarodni when he was in the offside situation.
The performance of Dijon players frustrated their coach and fans because they conceded the goal after very bad defensive positioning on a set-piece and after Marie hit the post from a very good chance they were without a creative player to hurt rivals defense. In the second half, they exposed themselves to the Angers counters and the final result could be even worse. They are also trying to be involved in the transfer market and according to media reports English defender Jonathan Panzo has agreed to join Dijon from Monaco.
Dijon is also looking to strengthen options in attack because they sold Stephy Mavididi in the offseason to Montpellier. They signed Alex Dobre from Bournemouth and the striker will be available for a start on Friday. Goalkeeper Gomis is doubtful, midfielder Ngonda is under the question and Benzia and Balde will miss the next game.

Dijon could have a very tough task to stop the great Lyon attacking force. If Rudi Garcia can motivate his men to play at a similar level as in UCL matches Lyon will score with ease against Dijon defense. Lyon to win and over 2,5 goals are our preferable bets.
