A 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim in midweek - despite leading 2-0 - stalled Gladbach's recent recovery. Although they are still right in the thick of it for when UEFA Europa League and Europa Conference League places are dished out next month, the margin for error between now and the end of the season has shrunk. Yann Sommer's suspension is over and he will return between the posts for the Foals, with Tobias Sippel dropping back down to the bench. With Lars Stindl still laboring with a muscular strain, Valentino Lazaro – who netted in the midweek defeat to Hoffenheim – will continue in midfield, while coach Marco Rose will decide between Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo to lead his attack.

Bielefeld picked up big points on Tuesday, condemning Schalke to relegation to Bundesliga 2 with a 1-0 win. With Hertha Berlin not in action, that gave last season's second-division champions a four-point cushion over the relegation play-off berth, but nobody in Bielefeld will be making the mistake of thinking they are out of the woods yet, not least goalscorer Fabian Klos, who spoke of his relief at being able to celebrate victory despite also missing a penalty. He should lead Frank Kramer's attack once again, although the Arminia coach does not have the luxury of being able to name an unchanged side since Cedric Brunner is suspended.
Nathan de Medina – himself just one yellow card away from a statutory suspension – should deputize for him, with the rest of the team largely picking itself. Only Schalke (18) has found the back of the net fewer times than Bielefeld (22) this term. It’s also just Schalke who have collected fewer points than Bielefeld on their travels in 2020/21, although Arminia is currently three games unbeaten away from home (W1, D2) - their longest sequence without an away loss all season.
