Olympique Marseille host Manchester City at Stade Velodrome (Marseille) in the second round of the Group C in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 27 and the match kicks off at 8pm (UK).
MATCH PREVIEW
The hosts lost to Olympiacos in the first round (1-0) and are 3rd in the table above Porto on goal difference. However, with just two defeats in all competitions this season they are probably best positioned to surprise the last years quarter-finalists. As for the visitors, Man City expectedly opened their Champions League campaign with a home win against Porto (3-1) and will look for another win on Tuesday as they would like to confirm the role of the favourites to top the group C they had been given for obvious reasons before the competition started.
MATCH ANALYSIS
Marseille have had a tough start to the season, facing Lyon, Lille, Saint-Etienne and PSG IN THE league, but have lost just once and have been difficult to beat for some time now. With a solid defence and real flair in the opposing third, the Ligue 1 runners-up may be best placed to claim the 2nd place behind City in Group C. However, there was a lot of soul searching in the Marseille ranks following the Match-day 1 Champions League loss at Olympiacos.
What made the 1-0 defeat harder to swallow was Hassan Maghoub's injury-time winner being set up by former Vélodrome favourite Mathieu Valbuena. After a decent first half, the French side's level dropped in the second and they were made to pay right at the end, making their Group C task already complicated and reviving the remnants of their last Champions League campaign in 2013-2014, when they finished with no points. Lyon played with three centre-halves against City last season and Villas-Boas dropped a strong hint of a change to OM's tactics for the crunch fixture at Vélodrome.
As for Man City, despite their mixed record of four defeats in their nine opening Champions League group games since 2011, they started the new CL campaign on the front foot. They made a winning start to their 10th attempt at winning the Champions League after fighting back to beat Porto after the Portuguese champions took a surprise early lead. Sergio Aguero quickly equalized from the spot and second-half goals from Ilkay Gundogan and substitute Ferran Torres gave City victory. This was not a perfect performance from City, who were sloppy in possession in dangerous positions, especially early on, but were in full control by the time their opening game in Group C was over. The only negative from the game was an injury blow to Fernandino who is likely to miss the next six weeks and with a busy schedule ahead, they are already without their talisman Kevin de Bruyne as well as Jesus, Nathan Ake, Benjamin Mendy and Aymeric Laporte.
