Olympiacos host Arsenal at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium (Piraeus) in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the Europa League and the match kicks off at 8 pm (UK) on Thursday, March 11. Read our reasons for Olympiacos vs Arsenal prediction and betting tips.
With the Greek Super League title in the bag, Olympiacos beat PSV Eindhoven to reach this stage of the UEFA Europa League and now seek to overcome Arsenal for the second time in as many seasons in this competition. However, after losing to Wolves at this stage last term, they’ll still be wary of English opponents, against whom they’ve struggled in UEFA competition (W9, D6, L21). Meanwhile, Winners over Benfica in neutral Piraeus in the round of 32, Arsenal make a quick return to the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis to take on the team that knocked them out of last season's UEFA Europa League.
Despite losing their last five fixtures in the Champions League Group C, Olympiacos managed to take third place above Marseille to secure an eighth appearance in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase. Further progress was made when they beat PSV Eindhoven 5-4 on aggregate in the previous round, a 4-2 home win followed by a 2-1 defeat in Eindhoven that proved undamaging thanks to Ahmed Hassan's decisive 88th-minute strike.
Olympiacos have gained plenty of experience of facing English opponents in Europe in recent years and should give Arsenal a good test. They knocked the Gunners out of the Europa League last season before being edged out by Wolves and have also faced Manchester City, Tottenham, and Burnley over the past few seasons. On the domestic front, they are an impressive 16 points clear at the summit, with 20 wins and four draws from 25 outings. However, Olympiacos enter the round of 16 for the fourth time but have never crossed this threshold, losing all three previous ties.
On the other hand, dropping points in the Premier League again on Saturday just adds to the importance of the Europa League for Arsenal. Right now, it looks like winning the tournament is the only way they’ll have any chance of making it into next season’s Champions League. Possibly the only way they’ll make it into European competition at all. Mikel Arteta knows all too well what can happen if his side don’t perform against Olympiacos, so he’ll want them to come out strong in the first leg away from home.
Arsenal had to leave it late against Benfica in the last game, winning 3-2 to eliminate the Portuguese side. They’ve had a great Europa League campaign, currently unbeaten in eight matches in the competition, winning seven. Mikel Arteta’s side has scored two or more in seven of the eight Europa League matches and managed to get at least a goal in each of the last 24 in the competition. They’ve lost just on three occasions in the last 22 and will give all, knowing this could be their only chance for European football next season.

Olympiacos meet Arsenal having previously clashed on 10 occasions across all European competitions, with no encounter ending level and both teams winning five times each. The Greek champions knocked out Arsenal in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League last season, while the Gunners last suffered back-to-back eliminations at the hands of the same side in 2012-13 and 2013-14 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was the venue of Arsenal's dramatic 3-2 victory over Benfica in the second leg of their round of 32 tie and with the game being played behind closed doors, the Gunners won't have to contend with the red-hot atmosphere the Olympiacos fans usually generate. However, their defense remains porous so we expect goals on both sides of the pitch.
