Preston NE go into this weekend’s game on the back of two consecutive away defeats to Luton (3-0) and Barnsley (2-1) and are getting close to the bottom in 16th place with 23 points. Another defeat would not only dampen the spirits of Preston fans but also signal that they could be unstuck by the busy December schedule. As for Bristol, they head into this match having also suffered back-to-back defeats to Rotherham (2-0) and Millwall (0-2), which has pushed them out of the top six to 9th place with 30 points. A win on Friday could see them back into the play-off contention if other results go their way.
Preston have established themselves as a mid-table club in the last five campaigns as they have finished 11th,11th,7th,14th, and 9th, and the big question is if they can break into that top-six bracket this season. Alex Neil, the manager, remains faithful to the Lilywhites which signals the belief he must have in this crop of players. Midfield duo Potts and Ledson missed the trip to Oakwell and doubtful for Friday night, while Rafferty, Bayliss, and Scott Sinclair all likely to return.
As for their latest defeat to Barnsley, Sean Maguire put the hosts ahead inside two minutes with his header, but Barnsley consolidated after the interval and leveled after captain Alex Mowatt’s long-range strike. Barnsley took the lead with 10 minutes to spare when Adeboyejo completed the comeback.
Bristol, on the other hand, look good on paper, and with a relatively easy start to the season and four successive wins, they got the early momentum going. However, that 'streaky' trait of theirs has shown its face again as they went on a barren run of five games without a victory before they strang three wins in the row. They have now continued to blow hot and cold and have fallen out of the play-off picture after their fourth loss in the last six games (W2).
The Tykes had a frustrating night in midweek against the Lions who ended their 10-game winless run. Millwall went in front after 18 minutes whit Bradshaw's 20-yard deflected shot and Mason Bennett, former Derby County winger, extended Millwall's lead with a superb strike into the bottom corner. The Robins had bossed possession throughout, yet lacked any genuine cutting edge. Their misery was compounded by the late sending off of striker Famara Diedhiou and they have now scored just once in four games.
