A run of five defeats in a row after going down 1-0 at Brentford leaves Rotherham on the brink of relegation from the Championship. In fact, should results not fall their way this weekend, their doom could be confirmed and having played nine times in April due to a prior Covid-19 outbreak, manager Paul Warne has blamed their misfortune on that ‘brutal’ schedule. Meanwhile, the penultimate game for Blackburn’s season sees them play for pride as a mid-table finish beckons. Regardless, that didn’t stop them from pummelling Huddersfield 5-2 last time out in their joint-highest scoring game of the season. They’ve now won two of their last three Championship games, after going winless in the seven prior.
Due to a double Covid outbreak, the Millers have been playing catch-up and their hopes of avoiding relegation have been kept alive because of their resulting games in hand. However, they have not made the most of them and as things stand, they are in 22nd place, four points behind Derby, with only one game in hand. Rotherham are battling for their Championship lives and badly need a win here to stand the chance of overtaking Derby.
The Millers' final three matches are at home to Blackburn on Saturday, away to Luton, and then away to Cardiff on the final day of the season. With that said, any realistic Millers fan would have taken fourth from the bottom before the season started, given the quality and additional financial clout of the majority of teams in the Championship. Rotherham have been relegated twice and promoted twice in the last four seasons under Paul Warne and four 1-0 defeats and a 1-1 draw in the last five fixtures look ominous for the Millers.
As for Blackburn, of the 19 defeats Rovers have now suffered, 15 have been by a one-goal margin, with nine of those coming by way of 1-0 losses. It’s been a common theme for Mowbray’s side, who have fallen behind in 26 of their 44 matches, and come back to win just two, and draw a further five. And remember, it was only several months ago that top six was the ambition – now the talk of the top six is laughable given Rovers' current predicament.
Even with their last week’s 5-2 drubbing of Huddersfield, Rovers don't appear to have learned from their mistakes which has contributed to their demise. On the road, Blackburn have conceded first in 68 percent of their away league games and have never won when doing so (D3, L12) - including eight of their last nine trips. Keeping Rotherham at bay is crucial here as all six of Blackburn’s away league victories came without reply - only two sides have won more away games ‘to nil’.

Rotherham meet Blackburn having previously lost eight of their last nine home league matches, with the exception being a 3-1 victory over QPR in April. Interestingly, in the last 15 league meetings between Rotherham and Blackburn, the home side has won 11 times (D3, L1) – the only away win in the run was in April 2016, a 1-0 Rovers victory.
Rotherham just lack the edge at the moment but must go all blazing here. On the other hand, Blackburn’s impressive win against the Terriers may have given them something to think about for the next season and they should do better than to go out with a whimper.
