SHEFFIELD UTD VS MANCHESTER UTD MATCH ANALYSIS
The Blades have had a nightmarish start as they continue their twelve-game winless streak. After getting their only point in the league so far against Fulham at home (1-1) in the 5th week, they continued the terrible run in the next seven matches. After losing to Southampton last weekend (3-0), they are rooted to the bottom of the table with a solitary point, being the only top-flight side without a league win so far. As for Man Utd, after a draw in the Manchester derby (0-0), the Red Devils have fallen to 8th in the standings with 20 points from their respective fixtures, albeit with a game in hand.
Sheffield Utd have had the worst start in the league under Chris Wilder. They picked up seventeen points from their opening twelve games last season and they have already shipped twice as many goals in 2020-21 as they had at this stage last year, scoring only five times. It means that no side has scored fewer than them so far. It will be impossible to repeat the last year's campaign and more realistically, the number one objective for 2020/21 will be to ensure they stay up.
As for their game at Southampton, it is only fair to say that no team in the Premier League era has had so few points at this stage of the season and gone on to avoid relegation. Che Adams got the opener, Armstrong scored a deflected second, and substitute Redmond added the third. Sheffield’s winless run, going back to the end of last season, now stands at 15 games. Fourteen of those have been defeats.
Man Utd, on the other hand, have problems of their own. The incredible away results have been keeping them within reach of the top of the Premier League table, but going out of the Champions League could dent their confidence even more and heap an extra bit of pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After their defeat against Leipzig in the CL, they picked themselves up enough to hold Man City to a goalless draw at Old Trafford. However, this is a must win for Ole and his Red Devils.
In a game devoid of quality and excitement, neither side was able to carve out the opportunity that could make a difference in a dismal stalemate at Old Trafford. United needed some sort of response after their CL exit, and not losing to City could give a reason to celebrate. However, taking into account the last few Manchester derbies where United were superior, their Saturday performance can indeed be deemed cowardly.
